Vertical Interoperability

Definition: The ability to move data from one entity, such as the school or district, to another entity at the same or higher level. By introducing a regional ZIS, information can move from a district implementing SIF to the State.

What This Means: Vertical interoperability is the sharing of data or information among applications at different organizations at different administrative levels. The direction of data flow is not restricted, though most frequently it is to a more central organization (school to district, district to state, state to federal government). Often the vertical sharing occurs outside or across normal zone boundaries. (Contrast with Horizontal Interoperability.)
