Audit Trail

Definition: An audit trail is a chronological record, set of records, and/or source of records that provides documentation of a sequence of activities.  Within software applications, an audit trail may document who and when changes and updates are made to code or data.

What this means: For education records, knowing who makes changes and when can be crucial.  For education metadata, knowing the definitions and code sets associated with the reported data at each point in time, for example, and the history of all changes, can be essential to proper use and interpretation of the data.
